The Community Boat Project (slideshow above) brings Jefferson County students together with mentors to build, maintain and repair boats. This pairing of people and projects produces amazing results as the genders and generations collaborate to address needs. The rapport, skills and accomplishments are based on communication in what is to the students a new language, with new tools, and developing a work ethic...one not based on monetary gain, rather pride and connection. The groups break out into a wide range of projects, working independently and in teams as their projects progress. One group may be lofting a boat, preparing to build it, another may be completing last year's boat's accessories, while another repairs a boat built years before, and other students are painting a mural. Now that is education in action! The group meets every Thursday afternoon in the upper campus of The North West Wooden Boat School in Port Hadlock, Washington, under the direction of Wayne Chementi and Marcie Van Cleve. Your support and participation would be welcome aboard!
